Cabaniss studied at the Art Students League in New York and Columbia University, and took additional coursework at the Universities of Georgia and Virginia. She was involved in many art programs throughout Savannah, but her most important contribution was introducing an art curriculum to the Chatham County public schools in 1915. In turn, she collaborated with other Telfair volunteers to provide training for teachers related to the museum’s exhibitions. Today, the museum’s exhibitions of work by public school teachers are named after her.
