Hampton taught at Savannah State College from 1952 until 1969. During that time, he developed the arts program and advanced his own career as a painter of social realist genre scenes. In the mid-1960s, Hampton’s work began to explore abstraction as well as nontraditional media such as string and chemically altered paints. He poured acrylic emulsions directly onto string gridworks so that the paint appeared to be floating. Hampton continued to experiment with materials and styles well into the 21st century, producing works such as Ceremony for Blossom that harken back to his earlier innovations but explore the technique in a smaller scale through more brightly colored compositions.
