He learned photography on his own and eventually joined the faculty at the New Bauhaus (later Institute of Design) in Chicago at the invitation of László Moholy-Nagy. Chicago was a frequent subject of his work, especially the city's famed architecture, and Callahan often framed its buildings in a very straightforward, formalist approach that drew attention to their symmetry and architectural details.
