Early in his career, Rosenquist worked as a billboard painter, which later informed his practice of using commercial imagery and creating on an exceptionally large scale. 'Space Dust' is part of the print series 'Welcome to the Water Planet' that considers the impact of consumer culture on the planet. In this collaged lithograph, Rosenquist reconfigured the familiar imagery of everyday objects such as pencils and a clock into a spacecraft-like form set against a celestial background that shows the "Water Planet" or Earth.
