After moving to New York around 1920, he worked as a janitor and continued to make art, with encouragement from leaders of the Harlem Renaissance. A Harmon Foundation fellowship allowed him to live in France from 1927 to 1932, where his friends included fellow African American painter Henry Ossawa Tanner, whose work is also on view in this gallery. This still life demonstrates the deep understanding of impressionist painting techniques that Hayden developed in France, skills that ultimately allowed him to make art his primary profession. Subjects for his paintings also included landscapes and scenes of daily life in African American communities.
