Label TextOriginally from Daegu, South Korea, Jiha Moon currently lives and works in Tallahassee, Florida. Describing herself as “a cartographer of cultures and an icon maker in my lucid worlds,” Moon mixes elements from Asian culture, contemporary art, and popular culture to create a vibrant visual language. Moon often uses yellow to acknowledge the association of the color to racial prejudices towards Asian identities in the U.S. In Yellowha, yellow brushstrokes imitate the marks of Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein known for his comic book-inspired style. Bananas repeat as the negative term for an assimilated Asian Americans, and the synthetic blonde or gold hair stands for Western ideals of beauty.
