She quickly established a name for herself as an artist in New York City at a time when her figurative style was not popular. Nevertheless, her willingness to experiment with style and her variety of subject matters demonstrated her range of talents and interest in the human form. 'Union Mixer' casts the United States as a melting pot for all people. Browning stated that "All races, nationalities, and ages of women and men are united under the flag of the U.S.A. As an immigrant myself I am very conscious of the great ethnic variety that is subsumed under the word 'American.'" The variety of profiled human faces represents a new flag and progressive vision for the United States.
