However, the pineapple-shaped finial comes from more modern European encounters. A “discovery” amid Spanish and Portuguese colonization in South and Central America, pineapples became a luxurious commodity in Europe and eventually a symbol of hospitality. This teapot bears marks for Peter, Ann, and William Bateman, the son, daughter-in-law, and grandson of Hester Bateman, an English silversmith who successfully ran her family business for thirty years following the death of her husband John in 1760.
