The subjects were very personal. “Art” is a portrait of her younger sister, American sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876–1973), while “Science” is that of her husband, marine biologist Alfred Goldsborough Mayor (1868–1922). Both are styled as classical figures. Huntington’s youthful complexion and downcast gaze follow depictions of ancient Roman empresses. Meanwhile, Mayor’s direct gaze, aged features, and laurel wreath resemble busts of Roman senators.
