Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, William Christenberry worked in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and assemblage. His work largely revolved around the iconography of the Deep South, its landscapes, sites, signs, abandoned structures, and history of organized racism. Christenberry’s work is represented in major museum collections throughout the country, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, as well as the J. Paul Getty Museum.
