Samuel Wilmot Jr.
Samuel Wilmot, Jr. was born c.1795 in New Haven, CT. He probably apprenticed under his father Samuel Wilmot, Sr. (1777-1846, active in CT 1800-1846). In 1825, Wilmot, Jr. worked as a silversmith in Georgetown, S.C. and is listed in the 1830 Census there. By 1837 he was in Charleston, S.C. in partnership with his cousin Thomas T. Wilmot (1804-1850), and then worked alone again in Georgetown after Thomas moved his business to Savannah, GA. After Thomas’ death in 1850, Samuel moved to Savannah and took over that business. He worked in partnership with Henry A. Richmond c.1853-1856. He left no active record in Savannah after 1857, and likely spent the war years in Bridgeport, CT. After the war, in 1866 Wilmot applied for and was granted restoration of his properties in Georgetown and Charleston, SC.
