George BiddleAmerican, 1885 - 1973

George Biddle (1885-1973) Born in Philadelphia; studied at Groton School and Harvard, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, in Paris at the Academie Julian, and also in Munich; active as a painter, sculptor, illustrator, and writer. Many of Biddle's paintings "remind us of the unparalleled beauty of our country, its vastness and fertility. They speak of natural renewal and suggest personal revitalization though the simple life lived close to the soil. These are the themes central to American Scene and Regionalist statements. Sometimes a region is suggested through design and palette as much as by the objects depicted. The flowers and produce of George Biddle's Groton garden reflect nature's bounty and the Hudson River Valley. The harvest of the sea represents summers at Truro, Massachusetts. The baskets of fruit stand for roadside produce stands in the farming country of New York and Pennsylvania, as well as the sidewalk fruit stands of the city. Radishes on an Indian blanket evoke the Southwest. Through choice of objects and design, these still-life paintings are regionalist statements".
