William Rickarby Miller
William Rickarby Miller was the son of English painter Joseph Miller. He studied art with his father, who specialized in landscape and animal paintings, before pursuing further training in London. William emigrated to the United States in 1844-45, settling in NYC. He worked as a portraitist; however, he traveled extensively in the Eastern US and produced hundreds of American views in watercolor and oils. Today, Miller is known for his landscapes of the Hudson River Valley. He also made illustrations for books and periodicals, as well as still lives of fruits. From 1873 on he mainly worked on his A Thousand Gems, a series of pen-and-ink sketches of American landscapes, which was never published. During his lifetime he exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, the Woodstock Art Association, National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
