Ernst OpplerGerman, 1867 - 1929

A Native of Hanover, Germany, Oppler began studying art at the Munich Academy in 1886. Whistler's painting influenced Oppler noticably during the 1890s when he worked in London. Like so many of his colleagues, Oppler was eventually drawn to Holland and he passed the years 1901 to 1904 at Sluis. After moving to Berlin in 1905, and as a member of the Berlin Secession, Oppler came into Liebermann's sphere of influence. His dark style was overtaken by Impressionism, and Oppler achieved some success with his paintings of beach scenes, tennis games, and dance halls: the middle class at play. When he settled in Berlin, Oppler began to produce graphics and became known as a printmaker.
