Theodor HagenGerman, 1842 - 1919

Born in Dusseldorf in 1842, Theodor Hagen studied painting there from 1863 until 1868 and became an assistant of his teacher Achenbach. In 1871, Hagen moved to Weimar to accept a position as professor at the Academy. After settling in Weimar, Hagen discarded his academic approach to landscape to paint the local fields of Weimar. He became an important German exponent of the new landscape painting which had emerged in France among the Barbizon painters and the Impressionists. Theodor Hagen made a significant contribution to German painting both as an artist and as a teacher.
