Emma Cheves WilkinsAmerican, 1870 - 1956

Emma Cheves Wilkins began her studies under the Telfair’s first director Carl Brandt. She also studied with Gustave Courtois and Louis-Auguste Girardot at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. Her painting of Playing with Reds (Camellias) was purchased by the Telfair after it was published in the annual Southern States Art League exhibition. Wilkins was a charter member of the Savannah Art Club and taught many Savannahians, including Hattie Saussy and Augusta Oelschig. [Cyndi Sommers, Asst. Curator]
