Mary Stevenson CassattAmerican, 1844 - 1926

Mary Cassatt completed her studies at the Philadelphia Institute, and upon completion, departed for Europe. When she arrived in Paris, she worked under the direction of Renoir and Degas, in the impressionistic style of painting. From Renoir, she learned his exquisite luminosity, and from Degas, she learned to draw with his firm vigorous pastel technique. As an end result, she composed large pastels of genre scenes with extraordinary beautiful coloration. She exhibited in all the major impressionist salons with favorable reception.
