Nowhere is his printmaking skill as evident as it is in The Flight into Egypt, A Night Piece, a biblical scene depicting Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus fleeing from King Herod. This particular impression is an early impression printed with great richness, either during Rembrandt’s lifetime of shortly thereafter; Rembrandt’s original plates were widely reprinted during the centuries following his death, making early impressions such as this one highly sought after.
