He became well established as an American painter only a few years after his arrival in this country in 1911. His summers were spent in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the second residence of many other artists in the early 20th century including Childe Hassam, Ross Turner, and Jane Peterson. In this scene of the harbor, Lever concentrates on contrasts of white and black, blue and orange to evoke the shimmering holiday atmosphere of summer in Gloucester. He maintained a studio there through the late 1920s.
