In 1883 he sailed for Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian and traveled extensively. After returning to America in 1888, Metcalf settled in New York City and became a founding member of "The Ten" American painters, an independent group of impressionists that included Childe Hassam and John Henry Twachtman. Metcalf was celebrated for his evocative landscape paintings, many of which depicted his native New England. In Buttercup Time, Metcalf utilized a bright palette, loose brushstrokes, and an informal composition to capture a sparkling field of flowers on a summer afternoon in New England.
