The Riders, whose trips started in early May that year, rode interstate buses throughout the South to protest segregation in transportation. In some instances, mobs physically assaulted the protestors and burned the buses they traveled in, while local law enforcement condoned the violence and arrested peaceful activists. The National Guard was sent to escort the Riders during their travels. Davidson’s photographs show the Riders inside the buses, singing and closing their eyes in an effort to remain calm as they observed the hostile crowds gathering outside their windows.
