In 1981, with the assistance and encouragement of noted civil rights leader W.W. Law, Herrington began his professional artistic career with an exhibition at the King-Tisdell Cottage, featuring watercolors of Savannah’s Frogtown community. Law and Herrington were invested in preserving the memory and important history of Savannah’s African American neighborhoods. Herrington’s paintings often offer romanticized, nostalgic views of 1950s and ’60s Savannah, based on the artist’s childhood memories. Herrington seeks to record the older parts of town that are in danger of disappearing due to development and gentrification. He includes figures walking, talking, playing chess, and hanging laundry–glimpses of everyday life in the city.
