He spent most of his life between Paris and the Netherlands, where he became fascinated with life in the Dutch countryside. MacEwen skillfully used light in his compositions, as seen here in the bright sunlight that shines on the tops of the children’s heads and the fields. The strong light casts shadows across their bodies and on the ground in front of them. With their open mouths and curious facial expressions, viewers can almost imagine the children calling out MacEwen’s title, which roughly translates to “Hey, you, come play with us!”
