Best known for his iconic and distinctive celebrity portraits, Winters has photographed public figures ranging from the Dalai Lama to President Barack Obama, Hollywood celebrities from Leonardo DiCaprio to Dame Helen Mirren, and artistic luminaries from Jeff Koons to William Christenberry. His style of portraiture is instantly recognizable, characterized by impeccable lighting, muted backgrounds of greens, browns, and grays, and the contemplative postures of the sitters. Winters defies the notion that a photographer known for celebrity portraits must necessarily be guilty of encouraging society’s relentless preoccupation with those endowed with youth, beauty, humor, and fame, instead presenting his subjects as individuals of substance with complex psychological depth. Dan Winters photographed comedian Will Ferrell while shooting a series of humorous videos for WIRED magazine for a feature titled “Where’s the Future? Will Ferrell’s Tour of Tech That Never Took Off.” In this image, Ferrell is wearing a headset meant to show what an “automatic dog translator” might look like if it were invented. In Ferrell’s own words, “I would’ve bet a lot of money that by now we’d have a device that would let us talk to dogs. Perhaps a helmet that would immediately decode a dog’s bark into ‘Hey!’ or ‘Hungry!’ or ‘Oh my God—cat!’ But I guess maybe we just don’t care enough about saving animals. Or the world.” Dan Winters resides in Los Angeles, Austin, and Savannah. He has received over one hundred national and international awards for his photography, including such major honors as the World Press Photo Award (2004) and the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography (1998), and his work can be found in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, Austin.
