He remained in Brooklyn for his undergraduate studies, earning his B.F.A. from the Pratt Institute in 1971. From the start of his artistic career, Winters’s work was strongly influenced by science, with many of his pieces comprising vaguely organic forms that often resembled microscopic views of living tissue or organs. Others depicted detailed views of spores, stamen and other elements of botanical reproduction. Winters later made use of medical photographs and architectural plans as inspiration for the images he created. Winters has participated in innumerable solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and in Europe, and his work is in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Reina Sofia, Madrid; Tate Gallery, London; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and many others. Territories, in the Varnedoe Collection, presents the viewer with organic forms that could have been inspired by microscopic views of living cells. Winters’s palette of reds, oranges and pinks further emphasizes the reference to living tissue. The rough grids of black lines layered over sections of the composition restrict the living forms to man-made, scientific confines.
