Jones was exposed to crafts at a young age, playing with carved wooden ships made by his father (whose work is also included in this exhibition). Jones picked up carving on his own however, after a period of making furniture for a local studio. Jones was well aware of earlier Savannah woodcarvings when he began making canes. A devout Muslim, Jones avoided the depiction of realistic human and animal figures. His walking sticks instead often feature floral and abstract designs, including spirals, diamonds and ball and chain motifs.
