He studied at Wilson Teachers College in Washington, where he was an art major, and earned his M.F.A. from The Catholic University of America. Unlike other Washington Color School artists, Mehring preferred to use geometric forms in his work and to apply thick layers of paint. He exhibited extensively in Washington during his lifetime and was also included in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum and the Guggenheim Museum. The Corcoran Gallery of Art mounted a major retrospective of his paintings in 1977, shortly before the artist’s death.
