After graduating from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Literature, Connatser worked for a time in Chicago in the 1960s. Chicago was home to the inventive figurative painters of the “Monster Roster” and “Hairy Who,” artist groups. Although Connatser had no formal ties to these artists, his highly saturated colors and flat, distorted, and cartoony figures call to mind the work of the “Hairy Who” painters. Connatser returned to the south in 1971, living Savannah and later Atlanta where he had frequent showings of his paintings. In his mature style, Connatser layered dots of pure color over flat areas of paint to create richly textured images.
