Her process involved using graphic design software to create a composition, before transferring the image to a backing material to guide the fabric and beading. These deceptively dainty works depict scenes from the Grimms’ Fairy Tales (1812). In these vignettes, young children are thrust in dangerous situations, prey to assault, abuse, and kidnapping. Hooten effectively juxtaposes the dazzling materiality of her art with the menacing nature of the subject matter.
