Hall and his wife Mary completed the meticulous painting on these pieces. Most of the borders include single sprigs of feverfew alongside sprays of a grass-like plant, sometimes accompanied by a moth. This arrangement of single elements resembles plant specimens or pressed flowers pasted in a book. Even the moth, with its spread wings, looks as though it is pinned in place, a common method of displaying insect specimens in cases. These subtle details reveal the widespread influence of natural history conventions on design. Text written for 'Lingua Flora,' on view from June 21–September 8, 2024.
