Murray was something of a mystic, making drawings featuring strange spirit figures and producing an automatic “spirit writing” that has been called a visual equivalent to the religious practice of speaking in tongues. Murray, who was born in Sandersville, GA, claimed to have the ability to read this script through a bottle of “holy” well water.
