Beginning in 1992, she spent one month on each of the six islands that make up the entirety of Hawaii. Mayes used a 6 x 9 Fuji camera to produce large-scale prints that captured many scenes, from family life to mist-covered landscapes. Her fascination with Hawaii did not end in 1992: she has continued to visit Hawaii and produce photographs that fulfill her belief that photograph is about “simply looking outside and finding things.”
