Couches often were made as seating furniture for drawing rooms. Stylistically, this much simpler version of “Grecian” furniture became popular in the US in the 1830s and 1840s. It reduces curves, scrolls, and shapes to their simplest forms, with broad expanses of wood and little other ornamentation.
