In table settings of this period, it was common practice to lay the forks and spoons facing down (in the French manner), and they were often decorated on both sides. The Kings pattern for flatware is a fiddle-shaped handle with scrolled and threaded edges and includes a scallop shell and anthemion motifs in relief along the stem. Oscar J.H. Dibble (1812-1860) was active as a silversmith in Savannah from 1835 to 1843. He was employed by D.B. Nichols from around 1835 until 1840, with Pulaski Jacks from 1841 until 1842, and then headed his own venture from 1842 until 1843. Dibble operated as a merchant in Savannah and Columbus, Georgia through the 1840s and 1850s. He also enslaved numerous people during this time. Dibble is buried in Laurel Grove South Cemetery in Savannah.
