The blue-and-red color scheme and gilding on this tureen copies porcelain decoration from factories in Arita, Japan that was mostly produced for European audiences. A common subject, the blooming tree has parallels in textiles and other materials from Southeast Asia. Text written for 'Lingua Flora,' on view from June 21–September 8, 2024.
