Lownes (1792-1834), who trained under his uncle Joseph Lownes. The younger Lownes was active in Philadelphia from 1817 until 1833. The bowl’s boxy, almost square form and relatively unadorned sides echo similar features seen in American furniture of this period, which likewise became bolder in profile but less elaborately decorated with inlays or carvings than in previous decades.
