The basket is embossed “G.S.O.” for George Savage Owens (1825-1897), who grew up in the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Charles Grosjean (1835-1865) was in partnership with Eli Woodward (c.1841-1866) in Boston, and then in New York, where they supplied silverware to Tiffany & Company, as well as to other prominent New York City retailers. Grosjean's son Charles (1841-1888) became superintendent of Tiffany's silver factory around 1868, and over time became one of Tiffany's most prominent designers.
