The firm gained a lasting reputation for its elaborate repoussé works, in which artisans pushed the silver surface from the back to create a variety of raised decorations and then finished them with details in engraving on the front. The abundant roses and scrolls that adorn this hot water urn nearly hide the woman, dog, and cottage that are also on the surface. Other elements, such as the handles, finials, and legs, were cast in molds. The urn’s engraved “SGT” is likely a memorial to Margaret and Mary Telfair’s mother, Sarah Gibbons Telfair (1758–1827).
