Hester Bateman was one of only a small number of women silversmiths in Britain in the 18th century. After the death of her husband John in 1760, Hester Bateman successfully registered her own mark and operated the family silver firm for thirty years, successfully incorporating new technologies into her firm’s production that allowed it to reduce prices and expand sales to middle-class consumers. She was succeeded in turn by her sons Jonathan and Peter, daughter-in-law Ann, grandson William, and great-grandson William II, who registered the last mark of the family in 1843.
