An influential art instructor as well as a practicing artist, he was an early proponent of painting outdoors, or en plein air, as the French impressionists did. His study of a Russian wolfhound was probably based off of his own pet. A fellow friend and artist, Henry Watrous, described Chase walking “down the Avenue wearing a flat brimmed French silk hat, a broad black ribbon hanging from his glasses, and accompanied by a beautiful white Russian wolfhound."
