The refuge is an effort to restore and maintain a wildlife friendly habitat over the remains of human efforts to control nature for gain. A new, wild freedom covers the evidence of exploitation and repression. History is just under the surface of seemingly natural beauty. Who we are is there In Plain View. –Daniel E. Smith, 2022 After 23 years as a monk, Daniel Smith left to study painting at SCAD, becoming a full-time artist in 1999. His work is strongly influenced by his surrounding environment, and his paintings are concentrated efforts to understand and share a communal experience. In Plain View is built up through layers of pigment and wax that mimic the layered vista of the marsh itself.
