Possibly painted at the Knickerbocker Ice Company docks at the foot of Hook Mountain, the painting bears strong similarities to a Hudson River scene painted at around the same time by Gari Melchers. Melchers personally purchased this painting, and later donated it to the Telfair’s collection. Dearth was a native of Rhode Island who, like many of his artistic contemporaries, divided his time between New York and Europe.
