J. Shannon was best known for his society portraits. Born in Auburn, New York, Shannon went to study in London at the age of sixteen and soon became one of the leading portrait painters in England, where he remained for the rest of his life. A good friend of American expatriate artists George Hitchcock and Gari Melchers (both of whom are represented in the Telfair’s collection), Shannon often spent summers painting with his friends at their studio in rural Holland. In his striking portrait of Hitchcock, Shannon captures the artist painting in a garden filled with red poppies. Flowers were one of Hitchcock’s favorite subjects, as evidenced by the stunning rows of Dutch tulips he painted in the Telfair’s Early Spring in Holland, on view nearby.
