In his portrait of sculptor Charles L. Drouet (1836–1908), the artist concentrates focus on the subject's face by carefully replicating his nose and browline with stippling and short strokes. His rendition of the artist's flyaway hair suggests his temperament, while his sketched outline of the rest of Drouet's body and crossed arms further emphasizes the artist's head and facial expression. The scratches on this print indicate that it was likely made after Whistler cancelled the original plate.
