As a young woman, she attended boarding school in Massachusetts and later enrolled at Smith College, neither or which offered art instruction. After her marriage to Mills B. Lane in 1906 she was deeply immersed in family and children, although she did find time to study art at Henry Bayley Snell’s summer classes at Gloucester, Massachusetts. In 1920 she was instrumental in the founding of the Savannah Art Club, which brought in visiting painters to the city to teach. Among these were Eliot Clark, William Chadwick, and Hilda Belcher. Lane exhibited her work with the Savannah Art Club and also with the Association of Georgia Artists, actively participating in the art scene of Savannah until her death in 1966.
