Three-quarter length portrait of a seated young woman wearing a red dress with green and gold decoration. She wears gold bands on the upper arms and a red ribbon in her hair. Her right hand is in on her waist while her left hand is resting on her left leg. A gold pendant is attached to a white ribbon around her neck.

Rejecting contemporary Impressionism’s pastel landscapes, Henri called for a return to some realism in painting. He traveled throughout Europe to study famous painters’ work, and his admiration for Spanish artist Diego Velàzquez (1559–1660) led him to Spain. During his travels, Henri painted several portraits of young dancer Josefa Cruz (b. 1859). In this version, the vigorous brushstrokes he applies to her vibrant red and green dress contrast with her elegant, upright posture and the painting’s dark background.
