The medallion in the center features a simplified tughra, or the emblem of the Ottoman emperor. While the tughra can be an indicator of an object made for the emperor’s use, this simple version might also mean that this textile was made for the tourist trade. Because many Europeans and Americans purchased textiles as souvenirs on their travels throughout the Middle East, artisans made different textiles and other goods to satisfy their tastes.
