However, Hassam’s earliest training was as an apprentice to a wood-engraver. At age 55, he returned to printmaking, executing over 350 etchings and 40 lithographs depicting both urban and rural life, as well as nudes in the landscape. Hassam’s etchings are particularly admired for their impressionistic technique, which conveys a sense of shifting sunlight.
