Mahonri Young, grandson of Brigham Young, was born in 1877 in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he would later take his first classes in illustration. After moving to New York in 1899, Young attended the Art Students League, followed by the Académie Julien in Paris. His later studies in Italy informed his specialization in sculpture. Young’s sculptures focus on religious subjects and western themes inspired by his childhood in Utah. The artist has been recognized for his ability to lend weight and sinew to his figural sculptures, which depict everyday people living everyday life. Rolling His Own was one of the first bronzes to enter Telfair’s collection, having been purchased for the museum by Fine Arts Advisor Gari Melchers in 1925.
