Thomas drew these camellias from direct observations of the winter-blooming shrubs in friends’ gardens. She followed a format taken by many botanical illustrators, placing detailed samples of a plant against a black background to accentuate the colors of the plants’ flowers and foliage. Text written for the exhibition 'Lingua Flora,' on view from June 21–September 8, 2024.
